 BROKEN GLASS CEILING

Glass ceiling barrier is the term used in gender studies for the invisible barriers existing in a woman’s professional career. This piece is an amulet that protects from this type of discrimination: the person who carries it shows publically to be aware of the existence of these barriers but underlines the will to break and overcome them. The amulet is built with lapis specularis (gypsum crystal as transparent as glass), called in German Marienglas, as it was used to protect the pictures of the Virgin, and even Frauenglas (women’s glass), as they were the ones who used it frequently in that way. The fragments of this “women’s glass” are sewn by threads that transform them into a stairway to rise beyond the glass ceiling barrier.
